What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional Radiology (IR) is a specialist area of medicine that uses advanced imaging guidance — such as X-ray, ultrasound or CT — to perform precise treatments inside the body without the need for major surgery. These images allow the doctor to guide fine instruments, such as needles or thin tubes (catheters), directly to the area that needs treatment.

Most IR procedures are minimally invasive, meaning they are carried out through very small openings in the skin rather than large surgical cuts. Because of this, the approach is sometimes described as “pinhole surgery”. For many conditions, Interventional Radiology can offer a safer, less painful alternative to open or keyhole surgery, with quicker recovery times — and in many cases, patients are able to go home within a few hours of their procedure.

Who is an Interventional Radiologist?

An Interventional Radiologist is a highly trained medical specialist who uses advanced imaging — such as X-ray, ultrasound, and CT — to diagnose conditions and guide precise, minimally invasive treatments inside the body. These doctors are experts in interpreting medical images and in safely guiding fine instruments such as catheters, needles, and wires to the exact area that needs treatment.

Interventional Radiologists such as Dr Nimit Goyal have a unique combination of skills, with specialist training in both diagnostic radiology and image-guided therapy, enabling them to provide targeted treatment with accuracy, safety, and care.

What are the advantages of Interventional Radiology?

Benefits of Interventional Radiology

  • Less risk and fewer complications
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Same-day discharge in many cases
  • Quicker recovery
  • Greater patient comfort
  • Smaller incisions and less pain
  • Lower overall treatment costs
  • Precise, image-guided treatment

Interventional Radiology now plays an important role across almost every area of modern patient care. In many cases, the effectiveness of treatment can be equal to or better than traditional methods

What Conditions are Treated by Interventional Radiology?

The range of conditions treated with Interventional Radiology is continually expanding as technology develops. In most situations, IR is one of several treatment options, which may also include medication, surgery, or conservative management. IR often offers the least invasive approach, but the most appropriate option depends on your individual circumstances.
