What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional Radiology, or simply IR, refers to a range of techniques that use radiological image guidance (such as X-ray fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging) to precisely target therapy. Most IR treatments are minimally invasive alternatives to open or laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. As many IR procedures involve passing a needle through the skin to the target, the approach is sometimes referred to as pinhole surgery.

Who is an Interventional Radiologist?

Interventional Radiologists, such as Dr Nimit Goyal, are specially trained doctors with expertise in both diagnostic image interpretation and the use of minimally invasive techniques. They are skilled in manipulating fine catheter tubes, needles, and wires to navigate around the body under imaging control. Interventional radiologists have a unique combination of expertise, being trained in both radiology and interventional therapy.

What are the advantages of Interventional Radiology?

The recognised benefits of these minimally invasive techniques include:

  • Reduced risks
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Lower costs
  • Greater patient comfort
  • Quicker recovery and return to normal activities

In many cases, the effectiveness of treatment can be equal to or better than traditional methods. There is now scarcely an area of hospital medicine where IR has not had an impact on patient care.

What Conditions are Treated by Interventional Radiology?

With continuing advances in technology, the range of conditions treatable through interventional radiology is constantly expanding. It is important to note that interventional treatment is usually one of several available options, which may include doing nothing, drug therapy, or surgery. IR often provides the least invasive option; however, each case should be considered on its individual merits. You can discuss your specific situation in detail during a consultation with Dr Goyal.
